ਦੁੱਧ ਵੇਚਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਕੁੜੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਬਾਲਟੀ

ਇੱਕ ਜਵਾਨ ਦੁੱਧ ਵੇਚਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਕੁੜੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿਰ 'ਤੇ ਤਾਜ਼ੇ ਦੁੱਧ ਦੀ ਬਾਲਟੀ ਸੰਭਾਲੀ ਹੋਈ ਬਾਜ਼ਾਰ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਸੀ।

A young Milkmaid was walking to the market with a pail of fresh milk balanced on her head.

ਜਿਵੇਂ-ਜਿਵੇਂ ਉਹ ਚੱਲ ਰਹੀ ਸੀ, ਉਸਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਸ਼ਾਨਦਾਰ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਦੇਖਣੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਜੋ ਉਹ ਕਰੇਗੀ।

As she walked along, she began to dream about all the wonderful things she would do.

"ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਇਹ ਦੁੱਧ ਵੇਚਾਂਗੀ," ਉਸਨੇ ਸੋਚਿਆ, "ਮੈਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਅੰਡੇ ਖਰੀਦਾਂਗੀ। ਅੰਡਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਨਿੱਕੇ-ਨਿੱਕੇ ਰੂੰ ਵਰਗੇ ਚੂਚੇ ਨਿਕਲਣਗੇ। ਚੂਚੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਵਧੀਆ ਮੋਟੀਆਂ ਮੁਰਗੀਆਂ ਬਣਨਗੇ।"

"When I sell this milk," she thought, "I will buy lots of eggs. The eggs will hatch into fluffy little chicks. The chicks will grow into fine fat hens.

"ਫਿਰ ਮੈਂ ਮੁਰਗੀਆਂ ਵੇਚਾਂਗੀ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਨਵੀਂ ਪੁਸ਼ਾਕ ਖਰੀਦਾਂਗੀ। ਮੈਂ ਇਸਨੂੰ ਮੇਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾਵਾਂਗੀ, ਅਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਲੱਗਾਂਗੀ!"

"Then I will sell the hens and buy a beautiful new dress. I will wear it to the fair, and I will look so lovely!

"ਬਾਕੀ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਈਰਖਾ ਕਰਨਗੀਆਂ। ਪਰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਪਰਵਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ। ਮੈਂ ਬੱਸ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਿਰ ਉਛਾਲਾਂਗੀ — ਇਵੇਂ — ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਕੋਲੋਂ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਵਾਂਗੀ।"

"All the other girls will be jealous. But I will not care. I will just toss my head — like this — and walk right past them."

ਅਤੇ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਹੀ ਉਸਨੇ ਇਹ ਸੋਚਿਆ, ਦੁੱਧ ਵੇਚਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਕੁੜੀ ਨੇ ਮਾਣ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਿਰ ਉਛਾਲਿਆ।

And as she thought this, the Milkmaid tossed her head proudly.

ਪਰ ਉਹ ਬਾਲਟੀ ਬਾਰੇ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਭੁੱਲ ਗਈ। ਇਹ ਉਸਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੋਂ ਡਿੱਗ ਗਈ ਅਤੇ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ 'ਤੇ ਡਿੱਗ ਕੇ ਟੁੱਟ ਗਈ। ਦੁੱਧ ਡੁੱਲ੍ਹ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਜ਼ਬ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।

But she forgot all about the pail. It tumbled off her head and crashed to the ground. The milk spilled out and soaked into the earth.

ਹੁਣ ਵੇਚਣ ਲਈ ਕੋਈ ਦੁੱਧ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ — ਅਤੇ ਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਅੰਡੇ, ਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਚੂਚੇ, ਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਮੁਰਗੀਆਂ, ਅਤੇ ਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਨਵੀਂ ਪੁਸ਼ਾਕ। ਉਸਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਖੁਸ਼ਹਾਲ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਪਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਖਤਮ ਹੋ ਗਏ।

Now there was no milk to sell — and no eggs, no chicks, no hens, and no new dress. All her happy dreams were gone in a moment.
