ਸੁਨਹਿਰੀ ਹੰਸ

ਇੱਕ ਵਾਰ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਹੈ, ਸਾਈਮਨ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਦਿਆਲੂ ਦਿਲ ਵਾਲਾ ਨੌਜਵਾਨ ਸੀ। ਇੱਕ ਦਿਨ, ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਜੰਗਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਥੋੜ੍ਹਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਦੁਪਹਿਰ ਦਾ ਖਾਣਾ ਖਾਣ ਬੈਠਾ ਸੀ, ਤਾਂ ਇੱਕ ਥੱਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਬੁੱਢਾ ਮੁਸਾਫ਼ਰ ਉੱਥੇ ਆਇਆ।

Once there was a kind-hearted young man named Simon. One day, as he sat down to eat his small lunch in the forest, a tired old traveller came along.

"ਮੈਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਭੁੱਖ ਲੱਗੀ ਹੈ," ਮੁਸਾਫ਼ਰ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ।

"I am so hungry," said the traveller.

"ਫਿਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਦੁਪਹਿਰ ਦਾ ਖਾਣਾ ਸਾਂਝਾ ਕਰੋ," ਸਾਈਮਨ ਨੇ ਮੁਸਕਰਾ ਕੇ ਕਿਹਾ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਖਾਣਾ ਖਾਧਾ, ਅਤੇ ਬੁੱਢੇ ਮੁਸਾਫ਼ਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਚਮਕ ਉੱਠੀਆਂ।

"Then please share my lunch," said Simon with a smile. They ate together, and the old traveller's eyes twinkled.

"For your kindness," he said, "look beneath that old tree." There, Simon found a wonderful goose with feathers of pure shining gold.

Simon tucked the golden goose under his arm and walked to the village inn for the night. At the inn, three nosy sisters spied the golden feathers. "I will pluck just one!" whispered the first, and she grabbed a feather. But oh! Her hand stuck fast to the goose.

The second sister grabbed her sister to pull her free, and she stuck too! The third sister grabbed them both, and stuck as well. Now all three were stuck in a wobbly line.

ਸਵੇਰੇ, ਸਾਈਮਨ ਹੰਸ ਨਾਲ ਅੱਗੇ ਤੁਰ ਪਿਆ, ਅਤੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਭੈਣਾਂ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਡਗਮਗਾਉਂਦੀਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਆ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਸਨ, ਪੱਕੀਆਂ ਚਿਪਕੀਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਛੱਡ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ। ਜਲਦੀ ਹੀ ਇੱਕ ਬੇਕਰ ਨੇ ਮਦਦ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕੀਤੀ, ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਵੀ ਚਿਪਕ ਗਿਆ। ਫਿਰ ਇੱਕ ਕਿਸਾਨ, ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਮੋਚੀ! ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਿੰਨੀ ਅਜੀਬ, ਡਗਮਗਾਉਂਦੀ ਕਤਾਰ ਬਣਾਈ ਸੀ।

In the morning, Simon walked on with the goose, and the three sisters stumbled along behind, stuck fast and unable to let go. Soon a baker tried to help, and stuck on too. Then a farmer, and a cobbler! What a silly, wobbling line they made.

ਹੁਣ ਨੇੜੇ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਕਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਰਾਜਕੁਮਾਰੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਸੀ ਜੋ ਕਦੇ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੱਸੀ ਸੀ। ਉਸਦਾ ਪਿਤਾ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਮੁਸਕਰਾਉਂਦੇ ਵੇਖਣ ਲਈ ਤਰਸਦਾ ਸੀ।

Now in a nearby castle lived a princess who had never, ever laughed. Her father longed to see her smile.

When the princess looked out of her window and saw Simon marching past with that wobbly, stuck-together line stumbling behind him, she burst out laughing!

"Ha, ha, ha!" she laughed, louder and longer than ever before. At the sound of her happy laughter, the goose let go, and everyone tumbled free at last.

The princess thanked kind Simon, and the two became great friends, laughing together for many happy years.
