Week 8 · Living it together · Day 53

The Gurdwara — the Guru's door

The word Gurdwara means “the door of the Guru” — and that door is always open. Sri Harmandir Sahib, the Golden Temple in Amritsar, has four entrances facing north, south, east and west, welcoming every person from every direction and every background. In the Gurdwara there is no high seat and no low seat — everyone sits on the floor as equals in the presence of the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, and in the langar hall everyone eats together, side by side. When your family visits a Gurdwara, you are stepping into a space built on the values of equality, seva and unconditional welcome.

Today's idea

Gurdwara means 'the door of the Guru' — a place open to every person, every faith, every background, where Gurbani is the centre and langar feeds all.

Pick two or three — there's no wrong way to do a day.

Talk together

Ask: 'The Gurdwara has four doors, open to all four directions and all people. Why four doors? What does that tell us about Sikhi?'
