In Gurmukhi, most letters carry a built-in “a” sound. A mukta word (ਮੁਕਤਾ means “free”) is written with no vowel signs at all — so you read it using only the letters themselves. ਘਰ is simply gh + ar → ghar (“home”).
That is why mukta words are the first words a child reads. There is nothing new to learn — just blend the sounds you already know. Once two-letter words feel easy, the same skill stretches to three and four letters.
